Sustainable Institutional Knowledge: Hands-On Oracle EPM and Tableau Training for FP&A

There’s something to be said about experience. Typically, the most successful leaders have a wealth of experience in their industry, and it takes a lot of practice to get to that point.

The Challenge

A Global Pharmaceutical company based in the Boston area that experienced turnover was challenged with a lack of experience within its research and development (R&D) financial planning and analysis (FP&A) team. The company struggled to train new team members and maintain its institutional knowledge base for Oracle Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) Cloud and Tableau.

“After much research, we enlisted Stratos Consulting to assist us with this comprehensive project. Their Business Enablement & Managed Services (BE&MS) practice was a perfect fit for us because it allowed them to adapt their support model to the culture of our organization.”  – Senior Manager, FP&A

How Stratos Consulting Helped

Stratos’ Business Enablement and Managed Services team implemented a two-phase plan to train current employees and streamline onboarding for future new hires. Custom, hands-on training session focused on Tableau, Smart View, and Oracle EPM Cloud were developed for the client.

  • Trained each member of the FP&A team to design and build a Tableau dashboard to be used for reporting
  • Built a library of recorded training tutorials specific to the R&D financial planning and analysis
  • Established an on-boarding plan for new hires that requires employees to complete training within first two weeks on the job
  • On-going support of Tableau projects and performing ad-hoc assistance with monthly Microsoft Excel reports

The Result

The FP&A team is now confident in their ability to build meaningful dashboards in Tableau for monthly reporting and on-going analysis of financial data, and with regular use of the tutorials provided by Stratos, the team has also seen an increase in department productivity.

Being able to create Tableau FP&A dashboards on our own has enabled us to produce insights and corresponding visuals that get right to the heart of the matter. We spend more time driving insights and less time sourcing and consolidating our data. As a result, we can conduct more efficient meetings with business partners and overall feel like more of a valuable member of our company.” – FP&A Senior Manager
